GISAS 2018 Summer School

25.09.2018

From the 17th to the 21st of September 2018, the GISAS Summer School 2018 at the University of Bayreuth offered master and PhD students from all over the world the opportunity to analyze their thin film samples using small and wide angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS/GIWAXS) and grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS) measurements. The GISANS experiments were carried out directly at the Research Neutron Source FRM II in Garching, Munich, while the (GISAXS/GIWAXS) experiments were carried out remotely at the ALS synchrotron in Berkley.

In order to fully understand these methods, 13 experts from different international institutes gave overview and in-depth lectures.  Furthermore, the students gained practical experience with their own samples and necessary software in various tutorials where the experts were available for discussion.  Social activities and dinners encouraged the exchange amongst experts and students, helping to connect the students to the international GISAS community. The focus was always on presenting and working with own data. A poster session was also held as well as writing tutorials for proposals and scientific works in general.

The Summer School took place at the University of Bayreuth with a trip to the Research Neutron Source FRM II in Garching where the institute and especially the neutron experiments were visited.
